Stable backdrops for a horse browsergame

For EquinePassion, I designed a new stable background as part of a freelance commission, intended to present horses in a box stall going forward. At the time of delivery, the design was still under review with the client, so individual details could still change. The overall creative direction, however, was already set.

The stable background design for EquinePassion at the time (2014)

Requirement

The new background needed to show horses in a box stall while meeting two requirements at once: enough visual structure for a believable stable environment, without distracting from the horses themselves, which needed to remain the focus in the game. On top of that, the design needed to work as a starting point for later expansions, not as a finished, standalone piece.

Approach

I deliberately chose a traditional stall with a closed or barred front. This type of horse stall can still be found in many older stable facilities today, which makes the background feel familiar and grounds it in the everyday reality of equestrian sport. At the same time, the design ties back to earlier versions of the game, giving it recognition value for long-time players.

The classic stall design is also deliberately open to later expansion: different types of bars, different wood types, individual stable fittings, or additional background variants could all build on it, letting players adapt their stable area more closely to their own taste further down the line.

Result

The design delivered a reworked depiction of horses in a box stall that deliberately draws on classic stable facilities while also laying the groundwork for possible future expansions within EquinePassion.
